Aborigines put great emphasis on rituals; among which the harvest festival is the most representative in a year. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate harvest of the rice and to show gratitude toward ancestral spirits, and thus the celebration takes place right after the rice harvest. In the old days, the celebration could go on for a week; however, with the long working hours in modern society, the festival shortens to 3 to 5 days. The opening day is the busiest day when lots of dancing and singing are performed to represent cultural inheritance. In the evening come spiritual songs and dances for the ancestors. Traditionally, feast is held on the next day, and all female gather at the chief’s place instead of attending the party. At the farewell ceremony for the ancestors on the last day, however, only female are allowed to participate. The harvest festival begins with the male welcoming the ancestors and ends with the female sending them away. Different activities go on each day and it is simply wonderful and interesting.

Joint Harvest Festival gathers the six tribes in Hualien to celebrate harvest and to show gratitude to the ancestors for the blessings and everyone is invited to take part in.
